FEMALE PRO WRESTLING

Ric 'The Equalizer' Drasin

In the late 50's there were a handful of Women Wrestlers and they were used sparingly for matches around the country. It was a novelty to have them on the card, as were the Midgets.

Houses always had sell-outs when the women were billed. Who ever heard of a lady wrestler? This was a man's sport, and women just weren't part of it. If you looked around High School and College Wrestling teams, you would never see a girl involved.

Well, the pro ranks knew this and felt that there was a dollar to be made by this, so those women who showed the desire, found a way to train and prove themselves in the ring. They had to work much harder than the boys as everyone thought them to be too fragile to be in the ring.

Then came champions like Mildred Burke, Fabulous Moolah, Mae Weston, Johnnie Mae Young, Lita Marez and a few others. These girls could work harder and take better bumps than the boys.
They had to do this to be one up and leave the audience breathless. When watching them in the ring as a young boy, I felt like I was either watching my Mom or one of my schoolteachers. It really seemed out of place at the time, but yet interesting and captivating.

I'd go to shows in my hometown for matches and then the newspapers said the women were on the card and there were lines around the block. AS you know in my articles of the past I was trained by a woman wrestler, Johnnie Mae Young and she could kick most men's Asses. She was tough as nails and a good shooter besides.

Through the years the popularity of women wrestlers diminished and very few were on any shows anymore. Same thing happened with the midgets. It became politically incorrect for the little people to be seen with abuse and to make fun of.

In the 80's WWF started in on bringing the ladies back as valets and of course little to no clothing, but this sells tickets. Little by little the girls started taking a few punches and bumps at ringside and now have worked their way back into the ring for actual matches. The time factor is limited to a few minutes cause none of them can carry a match to any length. They just don't know enough wrestling to do it. But non-the less women are back in action.

I had seen this coming for some time and while training Men here at AWF, I decided to put a call out to Hollywood Actresses and train them to wrestle. I had 50 men to use on cards and only 2 women and needed to add to my list. This was one of the best moves that I have made as I had a great deal of response and have ended up with some girls who really have the desire to work and focus really hard. This only can add to their resume as actresses and lead into stunt work as well.

My girls will be the only ones in Hollywood that can put Pro Wrestler on their resumes and create a whole new interest in casting sessions. There is a lot of film work, commercials, and etc. for wrestling now days and a lot of it is for Men and there are many more calls coming through for women.

So, we've gone around full circle and now at this point, I have the girls that will be ready to enter the squared circle once again. And they will be trained properly to carry out a 15 min match with an 'old school' background.
